Waimate Centennial Athletics Day

Last Thursday Centennial students finally had their school athletics day. Earlier in the week the event was postponed due to the weather so it was a relief to finally have such a nice day to compete in track and field. Through out the day students from 5 to 11 years participated in high jump, long jump, sprinting , long distance running, discus, and relay races.

Thank you to Mr. Burt who organised the event again. Thank you to teachers who led their event and made sure each age group had a chance to compete fairly. This year we also had Jackie Smart the Social worker in Schools help us out. This was a great opportunity for Jackie to get to know some of her students and how they operate in different situations.

I was very impressed with the number of parents who visited us during the day to see what was happening and how their children were participating. I enjoyed having the chance to catch up with many parents. It is always good to keep in touch and find out what whanau have been doing.

This week those students who performed really well have been invited to compete in the District athletics event with students from all the other Waimate schools. This is a big day out with a very high standard of competition usually. On the 1st December those students who perform well at the districts will be invited to attend the South Canterbury Athletics event in Timaru. The best athletes from all schools in South Canterbury compete here. This is an event to watch if you are keen on track and field athletics.

I would like to congratulate all students who have participated in the athletics training and competitions in Waimate and beyond. Some of you have improved your personal bests from last year and others have just really enjoyed the physical activity. Well done everyone.
